Theoretical computational linguistics focusses primarily on the theoretical possibilities for using the computer to represent and manipulate linguistic structures. There is a variety of more or less specialised methods in computational linguistics to cater for the needs of the various individual subfields of linguistics. Mathematical linguistics deals with linguistic structures more directly in the sense that it tries to characterise linguistic structures mathematically and then to study their formal properties. Thus mathematisation is a first step in the direction of a computer based treatment.

The main research areas of this group are:

  • model-theoretic syntax
  • formal semantics
  • computational semantics
  • parsing
