Search of Secondary Metabolites with Anticancer Property in Cameroonian Medicinal Plants:

Oricia, Citropsis, Teclea and Fagara (Rutaceae)

Medicinal plants of the Oricia, Citropsis, Teclea, and Fagara (Rutaceae) genus are largely used by the local populations in traditional medicine in the treatment of diabetes, hypertension, cancer, sinusitis, headaches and bronchitis. Previous studies carried out on certain species of this family led to interesting phytochemical and pharmacological results. We intend to carry out a bioassay-guided fractionation to identify bioactive compounds in the crude extracts, isolate the secondary metabolites by chromatographic methods and elucidate their structures by using modern spectroscopic techniques. Pharmacological assays (cytotoxicity and toxicity) carried out on the crude extract fractions and isolated compounds could lead the discovery of active fractions and new drugs. The standardization of such plant extracts provides the local population access to treatment at a reduced cost compared to existing medications.
